How to Answer the Short Answer Questions on Your MBA Application

What is an admissions committee’s message or intent behind limiting an â€Å"essay† answer to 100, 200, or 300 characters? Just the facts, please. In fact, just the key facts. No adornment, no backstory, no extended rationale. Columbia Business School has had a short answer goals question for a few years now; Darden has had a 140-character Tweet question; and now HBS has a couple of these mini-essay questions. Yes, it’s a trend. In working with clients on such questions, I’ve been struck by how hard providing â€Å"just the facts† really is – it’s counterintuitive, it’s letting go. It makes the writer feel, well, a little naked out there. Adornment, backstory, rationale – those are the comfortable â€Å"clothes† now in a heap on the floor. So how do you give the admissions readers what they want – while simultaneously serving your goal of creating a compelling application that differentiates and distinguishes you? Here are 7 unadorned tips to answer that question: 1. Read the question carefully and weigh each word, to make sure you’re answering the exact question. (Seems obvious, right? But I’ve witnessed many very smart people misread the question or simply disregard the question, with predictable results.) 2. Short doesn’t mean easy. The opposite is often true. Allocate and devote some up-front thinking time to what you’ll say. The fewer words you have, the greater weight each word carries. 3. While brainstorming, decide which 1-3 key points you must convey. Don’t even consider anything else. 4. Also while brainstorming, consider the application overall. These mini-essays must work within a larger whole. For example, if you only have 200 characters to write about your goals, and you’re planning to shift careers, look for other places in the application to indicate that you have relevant skill sets, understand the industry/function, etc. 5. In drafting your essay, write a little over the limit and then pare down. It’s always easier to cut your ideas down than it is to draw out new words once you’ve completed your thoughts. 6. Make sure each word is meaningful. Stick to nouns and verbs. Use short, direct sentences, which allow you to â€Å"squeeze† the most out of the limited characters. 7. Avoid repeating the question. If it’s about post-MBA goals, the reader will know what you’re referring to, you don’t have to say, â€Å"Post-MBA I plan to†¦ You know the expression â€Å"short and sweet.† Turn brevity to your advantage. Analysis of Helen Simpsons Homework free essay sample

She also seems to realize that it is just that, a dream, because she loves being a mother too. In the beginning of the story, George’s mom seems to enjoy being a â€Å"work from home† mother and wife. She makes him after-school snacks and asks how his day at school went. She takes the time to listen and give her insight to things. She talks about when he was a baby and refers to him as â€Å"a lovely mild baby, like a dewdrop† (Simpson 771). This statement is pure fondness of George. She also refers to his crying as a lion’s roar. These statements lead the reader to believe she enjoys being a mother and her life. While this is going on, she is helping him find a topic for his paper. This is something only a mother who adores her child would do, as most mothers want their children to do it on their own and learn that way. We will write a custom essay sample on Analysis of Helen Simpsons Homework or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When she finally decides on the topic for the paper, that is when the tone of the story changes a little bit and the reader gets to see how the mother might actually want a different life. The mother decides to have George write about her and his father getting a divorce; however, she is going to have the mom leave the dad. This is the first hint that maybe she is not one-hundred percent happy with how her life has turned out. She gives details about how his parents were always fighting, and he was trying to block it from his mind. When she finally gets to the divorce she has the dad have custody of George and the fake little brother; George would visit her on weekends. This is another hint that she might want a different life. She could have had George move with her, but she makes the dad have the kids. She might want more freedom in her life to do as she pleases. She also has the dad get a girlfriend, and changes the fake little brother to a fake older sister. Neither of the women can cook, so George would have to figure out how to make food. This is where she gets a little vindictive. She does not want them to be well off or too happy. She wants them to be a little bit miserable, even though she is giving the mother in the story a fun life. When she describes what the mother is doing after the divorce, it seems a bit wishful. She has the mother go around the world. She goes to Peru, Thailand and Australia. She even adds in little tidbits of what she would be doing while she is in those countries. She would go bungee jumping, backpacking or eating new foods. With how much detail she puts into these things, it seems as if she has been dreaming of actually doing them. One would think that she would rather be out doing those things than staying at home working or being a wife and a mother. It could be true; however, she also has parts that make it seem like she loves being a mother and wife. The beginning of the story and her overall fondness of George are evidence of this. While the mother might want to be living the life she describes, she also enjoys the life she has. She goes into great detail for his essay while making the reader believe that she wants that life. Despite that she also has moments where it is obvious that she loves being a mother. These details can lead to conflicting thoughts about what the mother truly wants to do with her life, so the reader can decide what they think. JVA Corporation Simulation

In analyzing the current position of JVA Corporation and its future performance projections, the best strategy to employ so as to save and preserve the overall net profitability of the company is reviewing the corporation’s performance and revenue after every six months. Under this strategy, the corporation will either increase or reduce the employee pay and review their performance after six months (Noe et al 2010).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on JVA Corporation Simulation specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The corporation’s employees will get a pay increase twice a year depending on individual performance, if the strategy is adopted, unlike the current strategy where employees with satisfactory performance are compensated once in a year. Employees who do not perform will have their compensation package subsequently reduced twice within a year. This will encourage the employees to work hard and impr ove their performance since; none of them will wish to have their individual pay reduced (Noe et al 2010). The strategy should be in place for a period not exceeding a year given the expected improvement in the performance of the JVA Corporation. It is expected that after this duration, each employee will have improved their performance and thus leading to an upward compensation during the package review. After attaining the required performance standards, it will be wise for the corporation to switch back to annual pay review (Noe et al 2010). The half- year pay and performance review strategy will be applied to both employees within and outside the United States. This is because a very small fraction of the international employees are the managers, who are entitled to a full time salary. Out of the 185,000 corporation employees, 3,500 are management staff employees. This shows that they take a very small percentage of the wage bill to achieve the overall objectives of JVA Corporat ion. However, the review should be based on the location of the employee since the product market trends differ from one geographic region to another. Proper implementation of the strategy will benefit the corporation in several ways as the corporation will be in a position to evaluate its performance half way through the year. Therefore, it will be able to adopt new performance approaches or continue with the existing ones. The corporation, will also save the cost incurred in compensating employees whose performance are unevenly distributed within a year; those that perform highly either in the first half of the year or the second (Noe et al 2010). The result will be a motivated and improved performance by employees throughout the whole year since each employee will target a double upward pay review. As mentioned earlier, the corporation should swiftly switch over to annual review once the required set standards are attained. In this regard, JVA will be in a position to save a lot from downward pay review on underperforming employees during the initial implementation of the strategy (Noe et al 2010).Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More On switching over to the annual review, again substantial savings will be made since the compensation packages; earlier paid twice in a year will be available once a year but with same or better performance standards. The strategy is bound to have subsequent effects on the community if adopted. The double pay review will encourage more people to seek employment in the corporation, especially the temporary staff. The motivation given to the employees will automatically lead to better and improved product quality. The community members also stand a chance of getting more job opportunities should the strategy lead to expansion of the corporation, as a result, a need for more labor force. In conclusion, the strategy will be the best remedy for the upward revival of JVA Corporation’s overall profits (Noe et al 2010). Critical Essays on Keats poems Essays

Critical Essays on Keats poems Essays Critical Essays on Keats poems Paper Critical Essays on Keats poems Paper Essay Topic: Keats Poems and Letters Language is used effectively in both odes to create mood. In the opening stanza of Ode to a Nightingale, there is a sense of sluggishness, suggested by the heavy alliterative d, p and m sounds when Keats describes his heartache at hearing the song of the nightingale, ambivalently experiencing both joy and pain. Compared with the first half of the first stanza, the second half is full of light and sensual assonantal sounds such as beechen, green and ease. In this particular ode, there is a concentration on the senses and frequent use of synaethesia. In the first stanza, the visual can be said to evoke the aural and vice versa where the birds plot is described as melodious. In the second stanza, Keats manages to convey the taste of wine with reference to colour, song, dance and sensation, Tasting of Flora Dance, an Proveni al song, and sunburnt mirth. The fourth stanza combines sight with movement in there is not light, Save what from heaven is with the breezes blown, and in the fifth stanza there is emphasis put on the senses of touch and smell in soft incense. In the opening line of Ode on Grecian Urn, Keats makes use of a long drawn out i sound with his repetition in still unravished bride of quietness. Since Ode on a Grecian Urn is about a work of art, Keats draws attention to the fact that his ode is a work of art with the use of assonance, echoes and insistent sound patterns. His use of repetition in the second stanza, unheard echoes heard, sweeter sweet and pipes pipe, is effectively combined with the assonance of ears endeard and no tone. It is the frequent use of parallelism, constant personification of the urn, and the invocations and exclamations of this ode that highlights the specific language used for the reader. This ode uses what can be said to be poetic language as it draws attention to its artifice, to the fact that the poem has been consciously and artfully constructed. Both odes are written in ten-line stanzas, however, Ode to a Nightingale differs from Ode on a Grecian Urn in that it is metrically variable. It also differs from the other odes in that the rhyme scheme is the same in every stanza and consists of Keatss most basic rhyme scheme of all the odes, as it follows the scheme AB AB CDE CDE. Comparably, Ode on a Grecian Urn follows a similar structure to Ode on Melancholy and is made up of a two-part rhyme scheme. This rhyme scheme helps to create a sense of a two-part thematic structure where the first four lines of each stanza roughly outline the subject of the stanza, and the last six lines develop it. The final two lines of Ode on a Grecian Urn, in which the speaker imagines the urn speaking its message to mankind, Beauty is truth, truth beauty, have proved to be amongst the most difficult to interpret of Keatss work, along with the final lines of Ode to a Nightingale, where the speaker asks Was it a vision, or a waking dream? Do I wake or sleep? Keatss final question on the status of his experience in Ode to a Nightingale is problematic for a number of reasons. Whilst some critics have affirmed that the poem is about the inadequacy of the imagination, others believe there is a greater kind of ambivalence in Keatss attitude. It has been argued that Keats still suggests through his final question that such a vision or experience is possible, or at least, something he longs for. The last two lines of Ode on a Grecian Urn, Beauty is truth, truth beauty, is perplexing and has sparked much debate. However, it has been interpreted in several ways, mainly, in that it could be the speaker addressing the urn and it could also be the urn addressing mankind. It has been argued that if it is the speaker addressing the urn, then it would seem to indicate their awareness of the urns limitations, however, if it is the urn addressing mankind, it would appear that Keatss message is that beauty and truth are one and the same. There are significant differences between Ode to a Nightingale and Ode on a Grecian Urn, as in the latter, there is a sense of formality not experienced in Ode to a Nightingale. Most notably, there is no I and the focus is not so much on the mind as on the work of art, the urn itself. The suppression of Ode to a Nightingale is matched in Ode on a Grecian Urn, and in many ways, can be said to be companion poems. In the later poem, the speaker confronts a created art-object not subject to any of the limitations of time, whilst in Ode to a Nightingale, Keatss speaker achieves creative expression through the nightingales song which is spontaneous and without physical manifestation. In conclusion, though there are both evident similarities between the two odes, it is clear that their differences outnumber them. Whilst Ode on a Grecian Urn is much more formal, Ode to a Nightingale is arguably the more personal, if not the most personal out of Keatss odes. Perhaps it is the opening of the ode with the statement My heart aches that makes the ode appear subjective, whilst Ode on a Grecian Urn combines both subjective poetic expression but also objective historical expression. Although similar in format, the odes differ in their rhyme schemes and also it is the many paradoxes of Ode on a Grecian Urn that differentiate it from the Ode to a Nightingale. One of the many paradoxes found in this ode is that of the urn itself, as it is silent but is also said to be a historian that can communicate. Ultimately, one can appreciate that there are a variety of comparative and contrasting elements of the two odes, however individual each one may be. The Language of Coaching Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

The Language of Coaching - Research Paper Example In addition, due to these positive and negative effects of self-talk on athletes performance, a lot of investigation and critical interest has been shown towards the topic of self-talk by various researchers over the last years (Yang, and Mengze 357). Indeed, self-talk may defined simply as an internal dialogue where an individual interprets his or her feelings and perceptions in order to regulate, evaluate and then choose the best strategy to use in motivating and reinforcing himself or herself. Besides, most scholars have argued that self-talk has various physiological and psychological effects on athletes’ performances that usually result into positive performance. Therefore, this paper is going to discuss and analyze the importance and various effects of athletic self-talk, specifically on the rhetorical appeals and patterns of logical argument in which this athletic self-talk mostly relies on (Tovares 273). To begin with, self-talk can be either negative or positive; thus , it is important that athletes should try to mentally train their minds in order to gain self-talk skills that will motivate them to have more improved performance (Newman 4). This can be done through positive thinking that would allow them acknowledge their success and abilities, thereby guiding them on where to put more focus on. On the other hand, unproductive and negative self-talk has been found to be among the dragging and damaging thoughts that mostly distracts athletes’ performances, leading to anxiety and poor results in sports competitions. Due to this anxiety and low performance caused by negative and unproductive self-talk, it is always advisable for athletes to train their minds in such a way that they often reduce negative self-talk messages and replace them with the positive ones (Gi-Yong, Brody and Stephen 148). There are various ways to be used by athletes to develop positive self-talk that will enable them have good performance in both national and internat ional competitions such as in Olympic Games (Newman 4). The first step is to create a self-talk plan that will enable athletes avoid any negative self-talk that can distract their performance. This may involving creating positive words and statements such as â€Å"I am feeling strong† or mantas like â€Å"I am going to win the race†. These positive self- talk statements should be in such a way that they can be repeated over and over so that athletes can use them to replace negative thoughts as they focus on more positive alternatives. Again, research has shown that the more one uses productive and positive self-talk plan, the more positive results will come out (Yang, and Mengze 357). Secondly, it is important that athletes start creating positive mental images in order to create visual pictures of them doing what they have said. Indeed, the combination of the positive statements and visual images can give them positive results (Epting, et al. 311). Thirdly, it is also important that athletes get involved in the process of letting go of unproductive and negative thoughts. For example, in case they are in a situation of unproductive self-talk, it is important that they apply correct strategy to counteract these negative thought

Website Design Dissertation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Website Design - Dissertation Example The success of a website, that is discussed in the disertation is based to a large degree upon the number of visitors it can attract and retain. The researcher of this disertation was aimed to determine whether a website could be designed that would appeal to both adult and child users. The methodology undertaken was a review of available published studies that measured adult and child responses to various elements and interactivity with the purpose of identifying those elements that distract or otherwise repel potential users from exploring further. With this information explored in the dissertation, website designers can begin to develop more effective sites that work to make the site more enjoyable to both adults and children, thereby reducing design costs to employers while increasing site popularity and ‘stickiness’, the amount of time a user spends on the site. In conclusion, the researcher gives some predictions and recommends to continue such studies on human beh avior while on the websites. Further study should be conducted regarding the specific differences noted between adolescents and their associated adult counterparts to determine the feasibility of companion sites that offer developmentally progressive stages as a means of retaining visitors as they mature. Also the investigation should be made into the characteristics of sites that are created by teams comprised equally of male and female designers or the success of designs that include both curvilinear and rectilinear shapes in equally attracting both gender groups.

Abortion Essay -- social issues

Abortion From 1973 to 1987, over 22 million abortions have been performed. Pro-lifers would call that a terrible waste of humanlife. True, 22 million lives were taken, but I believe that we are better off without those. Webster's dictionary defines abortion as "the expulsion of anonviable fetus." Abortion might possibly be the mostcontroversial topic right now. I'm sure by now that you've heard of all the different types ofabortion. Almost all abortions performed in the US are surgicalabortions, where the fetus is removed by suction or other means.(Medication offers another option, to be discussed later in thisreport.) During a suction abortion, the fetus is dismembered anddisposed of by a small tube. This process takes but about 10 minutes, and the mother experiences very little or no physicaldiscomfort. Pro-lifers immediately say that emotional trauma andguilt haunts every woman after she has an abortion. However, during my research, I found numerous women who led (and continueto lead) prominent and scot-free lives after their abortions. Ithink that the mental state of the mother depends very much onher personal feelings toward abortion, and the actual experiencethe had before and during the abortion. I have found that most of the time, they employ the use of a few strategies for making their viewsknown. One tactic pro-lifers use to convince people of theirviews is to play on fear and emotions. Their graphicdesc riptions and gruesome pictures are a crude attempt to "scare" people out of abortion, while their pious talk andsobbing try to make us feel sorry for them and the unborn.Another popular strategy of pro-lifers is to protest things like"Life begins at conception! The fetus is human!" Science hasproven these facts, and pro-choicers are by no means trying todeny them. However, pro-choicers feel that the rights of theparents (namely the mother) override the rights of the unbornchild.Neither of these tactics work on pro-choicers like myself. True,pro-lifers are entitled to voicing their opinion (just as I am),but I feel that some of their methods (as illustrated in thenext section) are very unorthodox. A new bill was introduced in April 1994. The Freedom of Accessto Clinic Entrances Act (aka FACE or FACEA) protects womenseeking abortion, and the facilities performing them.Specifically, FACE protects reproductive health service staffand patients from vi... ...arepeople out of abortion. Judging by the reaction of the class, people have wised-up to pro-lifers. People will no longertolerate being bombarded with graphic descriptions, gorypictures, and sorrowful testimonies. To but it bluntly, I am fedup with extreme pro-lifers. Granted, not all of them are as badas I make them out to be, but about a year ago, while walkingout of my dad's office at Jewish Hospital, we were "harassed" bythree pro-lifers. At first I thought they would respect ourprivacy and let us pass. However, they blurted out "Did you knowthat there are abortions being performed at Jewish Hospital?!"What did they intend that question to accomplish? We tried toignore them kept walking, but they persisted and attempted toforce their pamphlets and handouts on us. I would have had noproblem had they simply offered us a pamphlet, but I feltviolated when they thrust them into our faces. After researching this report, I still hold my ground about being pro-choice. I think that th e woman's rights override thoseof the fetus. Regardless of the reason or circumstances safe, reliable abortion should be made available to any woman. Acts of Violence Against Abortion Providers and Clients.

Exercise the Mind, Body, and Soul Essay

Being in this class has helped me realize that my health, as well as others’ health, is very important. The past five weeks I have been recording my habits to see what was necessary to change. After the first three weeks, I had concluded that I really needed to increase my physical activity to do more than my average everyday walking. We were to go about our everyday lives and record exactly what we did on a regular basis. Before this, I would never have considered myself a person who exercises regularly. However, after this project I feel that I have earned the title of a person who exercises on the regular. Once I had picked my area I wanted to increase, I picked out to goals. My first goal was to exercise a minimum of 120 minutes a week. Two objectives I had to fulfill that goal were to complete my homework by four o’ clock each afternoon so that I had time to walk for twenty minutes in the evenings. Another objective I had was to park further away so I could wake an extra ten minutes to and from my car each day of school. My final goal was to lose three pounds by October 23, 2011. The first objective I had to fulfill that goal was to ask my friend/s Karlee, Sarah, and/or Samantha to exercise with me to help me stay motivated. My last objective to reach my weight loss goal was to do Zumba at least three times a week for 30 minutes minimum. Participating in daily physical activities such as walking or doing aerobic exercises is not only important for you physically, but it can also benefit you mentally and emotionally. A report shows that at least 60% of the global population fails to achieve the minimum recommendation of 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity daily (Saxena, Van Ommeren, Tang, & Armstrong, 2005, p. 445). Walking is one of the most popular, easiest, and safest forms of physical activity (Sykes, 2009, p.40). Walking has many positive benefits to doing it. You have  less chance of getting/having heart problems, lower blood pressure, lose body weight, stress reducer are just few good things walking can do for you.  Studies have generally shown that exercise increases states of positive affect or energetic arousal, and reduces anxiety, tension, or negative affect. Research has also demonstrated that exercise may be similarly effective in the treatment of depression (Lutz, Lochbaum, Carson, Jackson, Greenwood, & Byas, 2008, p.166). Exercise gives you something to do. It is an easy way to get your mind off negative things and makes you feel better not only physically, but also mentally. According to Sykes, et al (2009, p. 42), exercise can improve a person’s physical self-worth and other important self-perceptions such as body image. Having exercise goals that relate to personal performance and improvement is also associated with high positive emotion and improved mood. My last two weeks of recording was difficult to say the least. Some days seemed easier than others did. Walking a couple times, a week was easy for me to get in the habit of doing. Not only did I notice that I was having a bit more energy, my dogs, that I took walking with me, we willing to walk more around the house, instead of sleeping all day. As the days went by, I noticed I was finishing my homework earlier, which allowed me more time to increase my time to do activities. My friends were extremely helpful and supportive during this whole process. They were excited to come over and do Zumba with me. They would come at least once a week and work out for at least 30 minutes. I believe I have made a change for the better that will continue to grow. I have realized that I had just been lazy. I now have so much more energy in the days, which really helps me go to sleep earlier and longer. It was difficult at first to change my ways, but with the support of my friends, it made things a lot easier for me. With my increase in physical activity, as I mentioned,  my sleeping habits have gotten better, and well as my leisure time. Now all I need to do is work on my eating habits, which are not too bad, and I will be living a much healthier life than I have been.

Taking the step back to the time of the Roman Empire, as mentioned by Leaky and Lewin, brings a new perspective to the is sue and the ethics of species de-extinction: First of all, Nature has endowed every species of living creature with the instinct of self-preservation, of avoiding what seems likely to cause injury to life or limb, and of procuring and providing everything needful for life — food, shelter, and the like. A common property of all creatures is also the reproductive instinct (the purpose of which is the propagation of the species) and also a certain amount of concern for their offspring. (Cicero, Marcus Tullius Cicero Quotes) As Cicero explains in the above passage, it is nature that controls the destiny of a species. With no reference to human influences as a cause of species extinction, Cicero’s stance is for natural law. Yet, it can also be proven that Cicero’s stance has one exception which requires intervention in the form of genetic species revival. Neither is it a mean privilege of nature and reason, that man is the only animal who is sensible of order, of decency, and of propriety, both in acting and speaking† (Cicero, Marcus Tullius Cicero Quotes). In defining Cicero’s stance on the issue, it can be proven that only humans are a species

English only July 2007 PRIVATIZATION AND RE-NATIONALIZATION OF MALAYSIA AIRLINES (Submitted by the ICAO Secretariat) 1. BACKGROUND Malaysia Airlines (MAS) was incorporated as Malaysia’s flag carrier in 1971 following the breakdown of Malaysia-Singapore Airlines partnership. Since then, MAS has continued to expand its network and fleet. By mid-1980s, MAS had a total of about 60 domestic and international destinations in its network and a fleet of over 35 aircraft. However, MAS’s balance sheet suffered especially from the loss-making domestic services where the Government rarely allowed increases in fares because of a policy of promoting trade and tourism in rural East Malaysia. 1. 1. 2. LIBERALIZATION OF REGULATORY FRAMEWORK 2. 1. Under the Government’s privatisation plan, MAS became the first governmental agency to go partly private in 1985. The Government sold 40 per cent to the public, including Brunei Investment Agency, while keeping total 60 per ce nt in the hands of Malaysian Central Bank Negala and local Governments. The privatization raised additional funds for MAS’s capital expenditure on aircraft fleet expansion. The Government had also considered the idea of separating the airline’s domestic and international operations into two divisions to improve the profitability of the international airline, but the plan was subsequently abandoned. In 1994, as one of the attempts to reverse the weak financial position vulnerable to rising labour costs, higher interest rates and reluctant lenders, the Central Bank sold its 32 per cent controlling stake to Malaysia Helicopter Services (changed name to Naluri in 1998) led by Tajudin Ramli1. The move eliminated the Government as the largest shareholder, although the Government continued to hold a â€Å"golden share† giving it a veto on board decisions, and State-owned entities acquired a minority stake in the airline. 3. EFFECTS AND DEVELOPMENTS 3. 1. For cons ecutive three years after privatization in 1994, MAS posted profits. Tajudin Ramli’s new commercially-oriented management forged a 7 per cent reduction of expenses in 1995 by targeting fleet utilization, fuel usage and employee composition. The domestic first class fares were increased to compensate for cumulative loses. Some transpacific flights were replaced by codesharing operations, which increased MAS’s market coverage. 1 In 1996, Naluri’s stake was diluted to 29. 09 per cent. In 1994, Naluri also acquired controlling stakes in Air Maldives and Royal Air Cambodge, but both airlines ceased operations in 2000 and 2001, respectively. (2 pages) -23. 2. In the fiscal year ended March 1998, however, MAS lost $70 million and reported more loss in the next fiscal year due to the Asian economic crisis. MAS has layed off staff, cut its fleet and arranged $100 million credit with Saudi bank for aircraft sale and lease-back. It sold major aircraft and delayed air craft deliveries up to three years. Many unprofitable international routes were suspended or their frequencies reduced with the closure of several online stations. Nevertheless, MAS has built up a debt to the tune of M$9 billion ($2. 4 billion), 30 per cent of which was attributed to the depreciation of Malaysian currency at the height of the Asian economic crisis. 3. 3. In the early 2000, financially-troubled Naluri expressed its intention to sell its 29. 09 per cent stake. To enable reater foreign investment, the Government increased the allowable foreign ownership ceiling from 30 to 45 per cent. It was reported that Qantas, Swissair Group and KLM were prospective buyers, but they all pulled out. In December 2000, Government Pension Fund acquired 9. 1% stake from Brunei Investment Agency, and the Ministry of Finance Inc. bought back 29. 09 per cent from Naluri. As a result, the total Government shareholding (including local Governments and State-owned agencies) increased to approx imately 80 per cent of MAS. During 2002, the corporate structure of MAS has been restructured by removing aircraft assets and related liabilities from MAS’s balance sheet through the transfer of economic risks and rewards of such assets and liabilities to Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad (PMB), a vehicle set up by the Ministry of Finance Inc. The costs and revenues of domestic services were also transferred to PMB. In January 2003, PMB took over the Government’s shareholding (69. 37 per cent) in MAS. – END – Don’t waste time! The Forms of True Bravery - 800 Words

The Forms of True Bravery Nelson Mandela once said â€Å"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.† And fear is just a state of mind, a strong and thick barrier that prevents us from success and achieving our dreams or what we believe is right to us, but it is weak and thin when standing against courage, and once it is defeated, those barriers dissipate. But the main question is how can we conquer fear and in what form? According to the Trafficking in Persons Protocol, Human Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by threatening or using force, or any other form of coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability; or giving or receiving payments or benefits to relieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. We will write a custom essay sample on Human Trafficking in the Caribbean or any similar topic only for you Order Now Human Trafficking is characterized by 1. The Act (What is done) 2. The Means (How it is done) 3. The Purpose (Why it is done) People may fall victim to Human Trafficking for many purposes. One common purpose is for prostitution. Sexual labour is identified as coerced labour. Other common purposes are for child labour and the sex trade. The Vatican has described Human Trafficking as being worse than slavery and has been described as the â€Å"Silent Crime of the Caribbean†. Regional organizations such as the Association of Caribbean States, CARICOM and the Organization of American States have all expressed their displeasure at the rapid increase of human trafficking cases in the Caribbean. This growing practice impacts many nations across the world and the Caribbean has recently been drawn into what is being called a â€Å"global panic. † In the Caribbean the group causing the most concern in regards to Human Trafficking is Irregular Migrants – this includes the females transported to other locations (countries or regions) as commercial sex workers. The nature of the purpose can, without scholarly or legislative support, indicate that this is a violation of basic human rights. Caribbean governments are being asked to present an annual report to the US government outlining the steps they have taken and will take to challenge unregulated migration and forced labour, which are indicators of human trafficking. The countries are ranked according to their compliance with US’ wishes and a country that does not rank well or refuses to present a report are threatened with economic sanctions. Jamaica is among some of the countries that have been negatively ranked. However, the US government believes that Jamaica has the will and potential to improve their third tier status. Most victims of human trafficking may find themselves in situations where they fall prey to both physical and emotional abuse. Oftentimes Caribbean women are lured to the US with false promises of employment and are then sold by trafficking gangs, to the highest bidders all over the US and Europe. Caribbean states are eager to remain in good moral standing on an international platform. Hence, concerns about human trafficking in the Caribbean have increased mainly due to the idea of female prostitution and the urgency to rescue and protect a woman’s sexual purity. Makes you think, doesn’t it? Do they actually care about these issues or do they care by extension of their international image? Human trafficking is generally practised in the Caribbean in an effort to supply a demand for cheap, unskilled labour (irregular immigrants) and for sex workers in the tourist industry (irregular migrants). Human trafficking is common in many regions which are overpopulated and have high unemployment and poverty rates. According to the IOM* Legal Review concerning trafficking in the Caribbean statue laws have been put in place for the prosecution of traffickers, the protection of trafficking victims and the prevention of trafficking activities. Outside of the US and Europe, many other countries do not have the resources to put in place extensive legislation to fight human trafficking. However, there are some laws that can offer help to curb trafficking activities. The Caribbean’s inability to compare favourably with the level of the US and Europe’s fight against human trafficking is due to many economic, social, and legal factors. Some such factors are * â€Å"Law enforcement including prosecution and sentencing which may also be as a result of often using outdated criminal codes with inadequate penalties, many of which have not been reformed since the countries gained their independence. † (IOM 2005) Most Caribbean nations do have the desire to eradicate human trafficking but the state of their economies paired with their pre-independence law enforcement techniques serve as a deterrent. Of all the countries that have made an effort to combat human trafficking, Guyana has been the most successful by drafting a bill to Parliament which includes life penalties for trafficking persons, and stiff penalties for other trafficking related activities. This bill covers every eventuality concerning human trafficking. Jamaica has also introduced the Child Care and Protection Act which stipulates a penalty of ten years for trafficking children and provides protection to child victims. The provision that covers trafficking states that: 10. (1) No person shall sell or participate in the trafficking of any child†24 This leaves the rest of us at the will of traffickers, don’t you think. Unless the victim is a child, there is simply no law to cover such an eventuality. There is no legislation that criminalizes trafficking in women and children; however elements of the crime are upheld in the criminal code. But considering that some instances of human trafficking is likel y to be for sexual purposes, sexual offences law can help to prosecute criminals involved. Most Caribbean countries include in their constitutions a guaranteed freedom from forced labour and slavery. This guarantor dictates a fundamental right but does not include how it is to be implemented. This right is only enforceable against the state and not private individuals or entities, which means there is no provision for redress against actual traffickers. There are clearly inadequate provisions for victims of human trafficking, largely due to the limited resources that are available to implement these services. The â€Å"patchwork† criminal approach can continue to be used as a substitute for a better legislative system until concrete provisions are instituted to cover the eventualities of human trafficking. And even then it is recommended that the weak and inconsistent criminal laws are reformed. INTERNATIONAL LAWS AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING 1. United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime 2. United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children 3. United Nations Protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea, and Air 4. United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN. GIFT) 5.
